Live Scan is a digital fingerprinting method that captures fingerprint images electronically using a specialized scanner — no ink required. The digital images are transmitted to FDLE for state and federal background screening shortly after your appointment.

What Are Fingerprint Cards?
Fingerprint cards (also called FD-258 cards) are the traditional ink-and-roll method of collecting fingerprints. A technician rolls each finger onto an ink pad and then presses it onto a paper card. The completed card is then mailed or hand-delivered to the requesting agency for processing.
Fingerprint cards are slower, require manual processing, and have a higher error rate than Live Scan. Processing commonly takes several weeks after the card is received by the agency, though timelines vary significantly by agency.

When Is Live Scan Required in Florida?
FDLE requires Live Scan digital fingerprinting for virtually all Florida state agency background check submissions. This includes AHCA, FDOH, DOE, DBPR, DCF, APD, DOEA, FLHSMV, and FDLE itself.
Any professional applying for a Florida license, any healthcare worker seeking AHCA Clearinghouse clearance, any teacher seeking DOE certification, and any childcare worker seeking DCF clearance will need Live Scan fingerprinting at an FDLE-registered service provider.
When Are Fingerprint Cards Still Used?
Fingerprint cards are still used in limited situations — primarily for certain federal agency submissions, out-of-state background checks, or specific situations where an agency requests them.
